Men's Putting       Album

The Sun City West Men’s Putting Club conducts weekly putting competitions on the large practice green at the Grandview Golf Course, adjacent to the Golf Shop and the Crooked Putter Restaurant.  We lay out a unique 18-hole course prior to each event, using the hole locations which have been set by the greenskeepers.  We make the course as difficult and demanding as we can, within the bounds of our course layout specifications.

No reservations or cancellations are involved for our members.  Those who show up before our Check-In Table closes are assigned a starting hole for the “shotgun” start.  The event takes a little less than one hour to complete.

We develop handicaps over a period of time, so that we can compete (for low scores) within “flights” of comparable skills.

Camaraderie and developing our putting skills (on a true golf course green) are our watch-words.  We’re out to enjoy a good time!

PUTTING COMPETITIONS
TIMES AND PLACES

Our weekly putting competitions are held year-around on Tuesdays at a time after the Women’s Golf Club members have gotten onto the golf course.  We play on the large practice green at Grandview Golf Course. Our starting times vary during the year as the seasons change and as the number of Women's Club golfers increase and decrease.  The current times are shown in the box just below.  Advance notices of changes in start time are posted on the Club’s Bulletin Board.  During winter, our posted start times may be delayed by golf course frost delays.  The status of frost delays can be determined by phoning 544-6175 and at the prompt, pressing 4 for Grandview or 2 for Trail Ridge.

CLUB MEMBERSHIP

Membership is open to any member of the Recreation Centers of Sun City West.  Membership dues are currently $10 per year, reduced to $5 for those joining after July 1 of the year.  In addition, a new member pays $5 extra to defray most of the cost of his Club name badge.  A new member may join by presenting his completed Membership Application form and a check, payable to SCW Men’s Putting Club for the appropriate amount, at the Check-In Table at any weekly putting event.  He also will want to pay the entry fee of four (4) one-dollar bills for that day’s event.

A prospective member may elect to play one or two times as a non-paying guest in order to decide whether to join.  The non-paying guest would not be eligible for prizes.

BULLETIN BOARD

The Club’s Bulletin Board is located at the Grandview Golf Course, on the East wall of the building, just outside the door to the Crooked Putter Restaurant.  This is adjacent to the practice green where our putting competitions are held.  The Bulletin Board contains notices of importance to the Club members, including the posting of Scores & Awards results for the most recent two weeks of play.

Below the Bulletin Board are two drawers for use by the Club.  The left-hand drawer is a slotted locked drawer used primarily for the deposit of members’ checks.  The right-hand drawer contains an envelope of Membership Application forms and a loose-leaf notebook which contains copies of the rules and procedures, the Club roster, copies of meeting minutes, and other material of interest to the members.

PRIZES AND AWARDS

The entry fee for a weekly putting event is four (4) one-dollar bills.  Of this amount, $1 is paid to the host golf course as a greens fee and $3 is prize money, distributed back in several forms to the winning players in that day’s event.

At the conclusion of the 18-hole event, the players line up at the Pay-Out Table to turn in their score cards.  For each one-putt, a player collects $2 at the table.  A player who makes a "Big One" (a one-putt on the difficult hole identified as the "Big Hole" for the day) is also awarded the contents of the "Big Pot", into which is deposited $5 each week.  Whatever prize money may be left over is deposited into the Awards account to be further distributed by the Scores and Awards chairman in several categories.  Although all the remaining prize money is allocated to winners of this specific event, these weekly awards are accumulated and paid out at the Club’s quarterly General Meeting and Awards Presentation (breakfast or lunch is served at these quarterly meetings).  The award categories are as follows:

·        At one event per month, the President selects a secret “Lucky Hole”.  Any one-putts at the “Lucky Hole” are awarded an additional $10.

·        Any player who makes 3 or more one-putts during an event is said to have made a “Slam”.  An amount of $2 is deposited in his name in the “Slam Kitty”, which grows during the quarter of play.  At the Awards presentation, a drawing is made (among those eligible) for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners of the “Slam Kitty”.

·        A player who accumulates 5 one-putts during a quarter of play is termed an “Ace”.  An amount of $1 is deposited in his name into the “Ace Pot”, which grows during the quarter of play.  A player who accumulates 10 one-putts during a quarter is a Double Ace, and another $1 is deposited in his name into the “Ace Pot”.  During the Awards presentation, a drawing is made (among those eligible) for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners of the “Ace Pot”.

·        The remaining prize money is awarded for low scores to “Low Net” winners in handicap-grouped flights of each event.  These weekly low-score awards are made in even-dollar amounts ranging from $1 to $6 in accordance with the amount of prize money remaining after all the above “one-putt” awards have been allocated.

At times, because of an unusually high payout for one-putts and/or Lucky Holes, there is little or no prize money remaining to be awarded for low net scores.

To correct this problem, the Board on September 1, 2009, established a minimum amount of money to be available for low net scores for future events.  This minimum value will be one-third of the total prize money for the event.  If the money left over for low net scores is less than this minimum, the Club will contribute the necessary amount to raise the money for low net scores up to the minimum amount.

  • The "Hot Putter Award" is made at the end of each quarter to the member who has played in at least half the events and who has achieved the highest OPA (One-Putt Average, the total number of one-putts divided by the number of rounds played).  The award is recognized by a displayed certificate.
  •

  • The HOT PUTTER AWARD for the Second Quarter, 2010, has been presented to Bob Eastman.  His OPA was 1.692, 22 one-putts in 13 rounds.

COURSE LAYOUT

Using the 18 hole locations previously set by the greenskeepers, our course is laid out uniquely for each weekly event.  Our holes range in length from 20 feet to 40 feet.  The member in charge of course layout selects the hole that he considers the most difficult, designates that hole as the "Big Hole" for the day, and attaches an identifying marker to the flag pin.

HANDICAP CALCULATIONS

Handicaps (in the range of -2 to 10) are recalculated and posted each week, selecting the best 5 scores of the most recent 10 games, in accordance with the following steps:

·        Determine the total of over-par strokes for the 5 selected scores.

·        Divide this number by 2 and round down to the nearest (lower) whole number.  This result is known as the Differential Index.

·        Use the Differential Index to determine the Handicap:

After the first 5 games, a provisional handicap is calculated to allow a player to compete within one of the handicap-grouped “flights”.  Before that, the player is assigned no handicap (NH) and competes on the basis of gross scores within the NO-CAP flight.

A player’s Handicap is subtracted from his “gross score” to determine his “net score”.
