| There are 3 books on lawn bowling in the R. H. Johnson Library. They are old but things don't change that much. 1. The American Lawn Bowler's Guide by Harvey C. Maxwell (796.31, Maxwell), copyright 1966, is recommended by Larry Brohammer. It has some history; basics on grip, stance, delivery and aiming; duties of the players in the different positions; tactics and strategies; and other odds and ends. 2. Fundamentals of Lawn Bowls by Albert Newton (796.31, New), copyright 1960, is by an Australian who won a lot of tournaments. It also covers all the basics. It was interesting to me that these two books disagree about stance and aiming. 3. Bowls Encyclopaedia by J. P. Monro (796.31, Monro), copyright 1951. The most interesting thing to me in this whole book was that Bowling Green, Kentucky was named for the fact that they had a bowling green in the town square in front of ther court house where lawyers bowled when not in court. Also there are 7 cities or towns in the U.S. named Bowling Green. Thanks to Dave Reinertsen for these. |
