The Story of Porcelain Art
Porcelain art, originally called "china painting", is the art of applying overglaze paints on porcelain and china. The paint is applied in thin layers and then kiln fired between layers to fuse the paint to the surface of the china ware.
This ancient art was first practiced by the Chinese and Persians prior to AD 1000. Later European potters learned to make porcelain and began decorating it with overglaze colors. In 1873, porcelain painting was introduced in the United States. Today, hand painted china and porcelain pieces are prized for their beauty, and make cherished heirlooms. In January, 1980, President Carter signed a proclamation declaring porcelain painting a fine art.
